What is Emotionally Focused Therapy?

Emotionally Focused Therapy (EFT) is an evidence-based, attachment-centered approach that helps couples and families restore closeness and build secure, lasting emotional bonds. In EFT, we slow down the negative cycles that fuel conflict, miscommunication, or distance, and create space for each person to feel understood and responded to. This work supports clearer communication, deeper trust, healing from ruptures, and a renewed sense of safety and connection.

EFT Can Help You

  • Identify recurring negative cycles in your relationship

  • Improve communication when it breaks down

  • Express emotions safely and authentically

  • Understand the emotional and sexual cycles that shape intimacy

  • Respond to your own and others’ needs with empathy and clarity

  • Strengthen emotional bonds with your partner, your family, or within yourself

  • Build new patterns of safety, connection, and responsiveness

Couples often seek EFT when they’re feeling stuck in high conflict, emotional distance, or repetitive arguments. It’s also effective in repairing broken trust, navigating affairs, understanding mismatches in desire, working through sexual disconnection, and addressing the relational impact of substance use or addiction patterns.

EFT is also highly effective for families, helping parents and children repair disconnection, navigate conflict, and create more secure patterns of support and responsiveness.

Unlike approaches that focus mainly on changing behavior, EFT works at the emotional level—transforming the deeper patterns that create conflict or disconnection. This attuned, attachment-focused work fosters lasting change, more open communication, and a stronger sense of security in the relationship.

Working with an EFT Therapist

EFT provides a safe, supportive space to explore vulnerability, process difficult emotions, and create meaningful relational change.

As an EFT therapist, I guide couples and families to:

  • Recognize the emotional patterns driving conflict or disconnection

  • Understand how past attachment experiences influence current relationships

  • Respond to each other from a more open, compassionate space

  • Build secure, trusting connections

I integrate EFT with IFS-informed practices to help couples and families understand their protective parts—those that can get reactive, create distance, or block connection. By noticing and “unblending” from these parts, you can respond from a more open, compassionate, and attuned space. This supports deeper listening, safer emotional expression, and stronger connections.

Whether working with couples or families, EFT emphasizes creating an emotionally safe, attuned environment. My approach is collaborative, gentle, and guided by curiosity, compassion, and respect for your emotional experience. Through this work, emotions are honored, communication improves, and connections can deepen and repair.
