More About Makai

I come from a multicultural background and identify as a Mexican-American man with Jewish ancestry from both the Middle East and Eastern Europe. While it has not always been easy to locate myself socially, I carry a deep appreciation for my multi-cultural heritage and am constantly looking at my privilege and difference in each context.

I strive to be a committed ally to BIPOC/Global Majority clients, especially those navigating interracial relationships, race-based trauma, and other struggles that come from living in a white dominated culture and society. Additionally, I am an LGBTQ+ affirming therapist and I am here to support people regardless of sexual orientation or expression, gender, or lifestyle.

Additionally, healing and spiritual growth have long been central to my life as I have sought to live and be of service in the world with deep care and intention. I have attended several Vipassana and mindfulness meditation retreats for the last 15 years and have engaged in a variety of other spiritual practices including chanting, yoga, dance, journaling, and more.

When I’m not working as a therapist, I love being outdoors—walking in the forest, biking, or relaxing in the park. Another place I feel full is through music, a lifelong source of joy and connection. I feel most alive when I’m playing guitar, singing with friends, or dancing at live shows. On weekends,  you can often find me gathering with others for song, ritual, and food.
